Mike Tomlin’s late timeouts cause even larger margin of defeat vs. Colts

The Indianapolis Colts took over on offense with a 27-13 lead and just 1:41 left to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 15. The Colts lined up on first down in the victory formation and were ready to just run out the clock. But Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had other ideas. And they were really bad ideas.

Tomlin decided, with three timeouts left, to delay the inevitable and start using his timeouts. It was an absolutely ridiculous strategy, and it ended up costing his team. Colts head coach Shane Steichen decided that if Tomlin was going to keep stopping the clock, he would go ahead and start playing again. Indy promptly marched down and scored a field goal with less than a minute to play.

In a game where Tomlin made plenty of questionable decisions, poking the bear with less than two minutes to play, and dragging out a blowout loss only to get blown out worse, has to rank near the top.
