Former Vice President Mike Pence praised the current holder of his post, Kamala Harris, for conducting a peaceful certification of President-elect Donald Trump's electoral victory. The message came four years after a mob comprised of Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol seeking to interrupt the certification of Joe Biden's victory, with some of them chanting "hang Mike Pence" due to his refusal to prevent the certification.

Harris presided the ceremony as president of the Senate and in a brief and simple declaration certified the 2024 election results by saying "democracy prevails." Shortly after, she received a standing ovation from members of the Democratic party when her vote total was read.

Harris told reporters on Monday that by performing her constitutionally mandated duty to oversee the process she "did what I have done my entire career, which is take seriously the oath."

She went on to say that the process is something the American people "should be able to take for granted." "Which is one of the most important pillars of our democracy, that there will be a peaceful transfer of power."

As Republican leaders celebrated Trump's certification, former Vice President Mike Pence took to to commend Harris's stoic stance during the ceremony.

Pence wrote that the peaceful transfer of power remains the "hallmark of our democracy," adding that "members of both parties in the House and Senate along with the vice president certified the election without controversy or objection."

Pence, who won't have a role in the upcoming administration and has been critical of Trump since the Jan.6 riots, also praised members of the House, Senate, saying they all "did their duty under the Constitution of the United States," highlighting Harris's stance by saying it was "particularly admirable" that she would preside over the certification of a presidential election that she lost."

Other Republicans did mock Harris for having to preside over her defeat, with Eric Trump saying it was "the best birthday present one could ever wish for."

GOP lawmakers also gloated on social media: "We just finished the certification of President Trump's historic victory. This is also a victory for MAGA as we declare we are coming back and are taking over this country, and we are going to destroy everything the Democrats have done for the past four year," said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in a video right after the certification.

Others who joined the celebrations were Rep. Steve Scalise and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. The former said he was "honored to certify President Donald Trump's historic landslide victory today" and that he is "fired up to work with him once again to Make America Great Again."
