Mike McCarthy has a chance Sunday to be a hero to anyone who has ever been fired

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The Cowboys travel to Green Bay this weekend to face Aaron Rodgers and the struggling Packers at Lambeau Field and you have to believe Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy can. not. wait. for the opportunity that sits in front of him.

What’s that chance, you ask? Well, it’s more than just a regular season game for a very good team that’s looking to keep pace with the other very good teams in the NFC.

Oh, it’s so much more than that.

This game on Sunday is what anyone who has ever been fired from a job would love to have – a chance at sweet revenge over their former employer. And this just isn’t a little bit of revenge, no indeedly doo it is not. A huge win by the Cowboys on Sunday could basically put an end to the Packers’ season and leave them in a state of complete and utter disarray.

McCarthy, of course, was the head coach of the Packers from 2006 until 2018, when he was fired with four games left in the season. He coached the team to a Super Bowl title (the only one of Rodgers’ career) as well as numerous NFC title games and playoff berths. He had a lot of success at Lambeau until things took a bad turn and he was kicked to the curb.

Now the Packers stink and are a total dumpster fire.

They’ve lost five straight games.

Their first losing season since 2018 is staring them directly in the eyes.

Their QB has called out teammates for not doing their jobs well enough when in actuality he’s been bad and should be benched.

And now McCarthy came come into town and wipe them out with one gigantic victory by the Cowboys. Think he can’t wait to run it up on his former team? Think he can’t wait to celebrate with his guys afterwards in the visitors locker room? Think he hasn’t already imagined what it will feel like to pull out of there on the bus after basically lighting his former franchise on fire?

Think he hasn’t already practiced an evil laugh to go with that bus ride!?

I know I would have!

Man, that would feel so good for the big fella. And it should happen because the Cowboys are flying high right now and the Packers are already looking at draft position while wondering if they’ll ever be able to correct this thing.

What a fun opportunity McCarthy has this Sunday. I think a lot of us can sit back and root him on, even if we don’t care about the Cowboys. Because yeah, that would be a fun thing to be able to do.

Revenge, baby. It can be so sweet!
