The Kansas City Chiefs are in Phoenix getting ready for the Super Bowl this Sunday. Their former quarterbacks coach, Mike Kafka, was also in town, but but not to get ready for the big game.
Kafka is one of two finalists for the head coaching vacancy for the Arizona Cardinals. He interviewed Tuesday.
His one-time pupil, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes , had great things to say about him.
“Coach Kafka is a special person and a special coach,” he said on Tuesday during a media session. “He kind of took me when I first got here — he was quality control (coach) and that was my first year as a rookie, so I spent a lot of hours with Coach Kafka where he was teaching me the playbook and teaching me how to be a quarterback in the NFL. And that continued for a long time.
“I knew right when he left here, I know he was going to be a head coach somewhere soon. I know he’s down there in Arizona and if he gets hired there, he’ll have that place turned around.”
Mahomes, while Kafka was his position coach, put up insane numbers as a passer. He helped Giants quarterback Daniel Jones have his most effective season as a player in 2022. The Giants made it to the playoffs and won a postseason game.
If Kafka is hired by the Cardinals, he would get to work with Kyler Murray, who has played at an MVP level but had struggles last season.
Mahomes believes Kafka will be a good head coach. The question is whether the Cardinals do.
We will know soon enough whether he will get the job or not.
