On July 10, Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy addressed the media following a summer league practice in Las Vegas. During the press conference, Dunleavy discussed the Warriors’ recent off-season moves while also taking questions regarding the team’s current needs.
Currently, the Warriors roster is short on size at the center position, with no player on the roster measuring above 6’10”. In an NBA that currently possesses multiple elite big men, having additional size and length in the rotation is a core necessity to competing at the highest level. As such, it’s no surprise that Dunleavy isn’t closing the door on bringing another new face into the rotation before the new season begins in October.
“I think we’re going to add somebody with some size, but we have to be careful with the way we play, the way the league works,” Dunleavy said. “Just bringing in somebody that’s tall – you have to be skilled, you have to know how to play. I think we’ve learned that over the past few years. So we’ll always prioritize that, but the taller and longer a player is, the better.”
Golden State recently alleviated some of its size issues by adding Dario Saric to the roster. However, it would make sense for the Warriors to add one more big body so they have enough depth to navigate any potential injuries or load management issues that appear throughout the regular season.
After all, Dunleavy has made multiple moves to put the Warriors back in championship contention next season. Yet sustaining elite-level performances throughout the basketball year requires significant depth. Now, it’s just about finding the right player and hoping they agree to a veteran minimum deal in return for contending for a championship ring.
