Miguel Almiron reveals boots are ‘stuck together with glue’ following Newcastle United purple patch

Miguel Almiron has confessed he refused to buy another pair of football boots due to his recent goalscoring run. The Paraguayan is enjoying his finest season to date as a Newcastle United player.

Nine top-flight goals in 2022-23 is half the total Almiron has managed since arriving on Tyneside four years ago. Eddie Howe has revitalised a player who appeared headed for the St James’ Park exit a year ago.

The 28-year-old has opened up about his superstitious side by revealing he would not change boots. Almiron had been sporting green Puma Ultra Ultimate cleats this season - but admitted they were on their last legs before a recent switch.

Neil Stoker, the Magpies’ kit man, has bandaged the boots together with glue to try and keep his goalscoring streak alive. However, Almiron must have finally bit the bullet after firing a blank in his last nine games across all competitions as he wore a fresh orange pair against Southampton.

“My lucky football boots had opened up like a sandwich,” he told FourFourTwo magazine. “I told Neily that he had to do something because I’d scored again! He’s a genius. Somehow, he stuck it back together with glue and they’re still going strong. I just hope they’ll last me the season. Then I’ll sign them and give them to him as a present.”

The latest issue of FourFourTwo is on sale now.
