Miguel Almiron 'excited' for Newcastle United's summer plans

Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron can't wait for an Atlanta homecoming this summer when he and his side embark on their pre-season tour of the US.

The 29-year-old Paraguay international will return to his former side Atlanta United as the Magpies make a visit to Georgia, as part of the Premier League Summer Series this July. With 43 goal contributions in 70 games for the MLS outfit, it was Almiron’s form in Atlanta that inspired the Magpies to splash £25 million on the winger back in January of 2019.

Since then, the winger has of course gone on to become a key part of Eddie Howe’s high-flying United – scoring 11 goals so far this season, as Newcastle make a bid for Champions League football.

Almiron will return to Mercedes Benz Stadium on July 26 when Newcastle face off against their Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Paraguayan spoke on the prosect of an Atlanta homecoming this summer.

'I’m very excited to return, especially to Atlanta," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. 'What I had in Atlanta was very special, and it’s something that I’ll never forget. So I’m very excited to go back.

The winger enjoyed a successful two-year spell in Georgia, a time in which he helped Atlanta win the MLS Cup in 2018 and Almiron sees that victory as one of the highlights of his career so far.

"It gave them such joy for us to be crowned champions, and that’s the best part of this job, of what I do," he added. 'And for me, it’s very special. You know, I’ve lived in England for three years, but I still keep getting messages from the fans in Atlanta, and it’s very nice."

Almiron and his side will also visit New Jersey and Philadelphia as part of their US tour as they face off against fellow Premier League sides Aston Villa (July 23) and Brighton (July 28).
