A recent surge in robberies in the southern end of New York City's Central Park has prompted the NYPD to increase patrols in the area. The police have connected approximately 10 robberies to a group of migrant boys or young men, with incidents occurring inside or near the park.
The southern end of Central Park, a popular tourist destination, has seen a rise in criminal activity, with robberies up by 200%, felony assaults by 43%, and major crimes by 46% compared to the same period last year.
NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell stated that the robberies are part of a pattern involving migrant groups, working in groups of 8 to 12 or in pairs. To address the issue, the NYPD is deploying an additional 40 police officers to patrol Central Park daily from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
In an effort to enhance surveillance, drones will also be utilized in the park starting at the end of the month. The NYPD is determined to crack down on crime in Central Park and ensure the safety of visitors and residents.
Reports indicate that half of the suspects arrested for robberies in the southern end of Central Park this year are migrants. Recent arrests include an 11-year-old Venezuelan boy caught using stolen credit cards and a 17-year-old boy apprehended after an assault on a train in Queens.
