Miguel Almiron is tipped to become Newcastle United’s “surprise package” by many supporters this season. Despite spending nearly four years on Tyneside, the Paraguayan has struggled for consistency in a black-and-white shirt.
Newcastle fans have only witnessed glimpses of the 28-year-old’s quality - who broke Michael Owen’s long-standing transfer record in January 2019. However, Eddie Howe has proven so far he can reinvigorate players whose careers looked doomed at St James’ Park.
Joelinton, Ryan Fraser and Emil Krafth are three examples of those who enjoyed a startling upturn in form under the former Bournemouth boss. Many backed Almiron to follow suit when asked which player will take the Toon by surprise in 2022-23 on social media.
@itsmeyeahMD: Almiron. I think in a more attacking team he could have his best season. I think he was used poorly by Bruce. Not saying he will be amazing but if Joelinton can turn it around the way he has then there is still hope for Miggy imo.
@alexrobelo: Miggy for sure. If you think of Big Joe’s resurgence, it looked like he couldn’t even run with the ball pre-Howe. Miggy I think has some raw talent, he just needs refinement and belief.
@BbNufc: Miggy. He's a talent that needed nurturing (but wasn't getting that under the previous administration) and he looks to be putting the work in during pre-season. I'm looking forward to seeing him this season.
@ifyoucanbe: I’m hoping (it is) Almiron. He’s a likeable character and I want him to become that missing jigsaw piece for us.
Other first-team players were highlighted as ones to watch this season. Eyebrows were raised when Sean Longstaff signed a three-year contract in May but some believe he can break into the starting line-up.
Joe Willock is another who supporters have endorsed after an underwhelming campaign last time out. The former Arsenal star could not replicate the standards set during his initial loan move but improved drastically towards the end of the season.
@WOODZA: With the club not making midfield a priority, could Sean Longstaff be a surprise package of the season? Let's see if he can make a claim for the starting line-up in pre-season.
@ThomasStewartk3: Jacob Murphy. The lad has all the ability going forward and knows how to defend - a players' player.
@ben_jordan_: Joe Willock. Saw flashes of what he’s capable of last season. With a full pre-season under his belt and injury troubles behind him, he’ll hopefully be a big player for us next season.
@carlrbarnes25: Hoping Jamal Lewis kicks on this season. During that brief period he played under Howe before he got injured he looked like a real player.
@DavyBaty81: Anderson. Think if he gets a chance he’s going to become a star.
