Midlothian movie buff transforms old Volkswagen Beetle into Herbie replica

A Gorebridge postie has shared the amazing transformation that he carried out of an old school Volkswagen Beetle into a movie replica of Herbie The Love Bug.

Ross Nicholson, 27, who works for the Royal Mail, says that he is a movie enthusiast and has always had a dream of creating a replica of a famous movie motor.

He admits that his fiancée, Charlie, was sceptical of his original plan to buy an old school Beetle from London and have it transported to their home in Midlothian.

But all was well after soon to be wife, who is also Disney daft, saw the end product of what Ross had achieved.

Ross not only has an interest in famous cars that feature in Hollywood blockbusters but he also spends his spare time creating replicas of movie props - from the Terminator to Ghostbuster Proton Packs and even Marty McFly hoverboards.

On creating his very own Herbie, he said: “I have wanted to do a movie car replica for years.

“Earlier this year I took the plunge and was able to purchase a cracking Beetle from London!

“I got it transported up and began making it look like Herbie but the car needed a lot of interior work, all new carpets and a lot of other features.

“It had been sold with custom fitting Porsche seats which we have reupholstered and we have also made sure the back bench matches.

“Then we gave the wheels and tyres a movie accurate revamp, before the iconic livery was added!

“For as long as I can remember I wanted to recreate a movie car, and with Herbie being a childhood favourite, and relatively affordable, I went down that route!

“Collection wise I’ve not really got a lot of Herbie stuff - but I make replica film props in my spare time and have a relatively big collection of movie prop replicas!

“I’ve just always been into movies from a young age- so for me Herbie isn’t just a car, he’s partially a prop too - with a personality if that makes sense?”

Ross shared images of some of the props he has collected and created as well as the exquisite detail that he has put into creating his own Herbie.

He says that one day he’d love to be able to own a DeLorean but accepts this may be a bit too expensive at the moment.

He continued: “I live with my fiancé, Charlie, in Gorebridge. She likes it, I think she was a bit unsure at first with it being such an old car- but she definitely came around when she saw it all done, as she’s a huge Disney fan!

“I’ve always been into film cars, my favourite film is Back To The Future- but unfortunately a DeLorean is a little too expensive for us at the moment!

“I’d love to do something like this in the future but maybe a little later in life.

“It would just depend on the market and if I could afford anything bigger and more expensive!”
