Midlothian landowner wants to replace old caravan with holiday chalet

A landower who inherited a field with a run down caravan on it has applied for permission to replace it with a holiday chalet.

Agents for applicant Johnny Harris, whose address is given as Fareham, near Portsmouth, said he was keen to see the land put to 'practical, sustainable and worthwhile' use after it came into his possession.

The site, which lies at Nine Mile Burn, outside Penicuik, Midlothian, is accessed through a single lane track off the A702 and is an estimated 410 metres squared.

A planning application lodged with the council's planners says the caravan and an outhouse on the land are old and need to be replaced.

The proposed new chalet is described as compact with groundfloor accommodation and a mezzanine providing a second sleeping area and space.

The design statement for the new property says initial advice about the changes was sought from planners in 2016 when it was indicated it may be acceptable.

It says: "There is currently an old caravan on the site and the client wishes to obtain planning permission to replace this with a chalet for use as holiday accomodation.

"The current owner of the site inherited it from the previous owner and is seeking to ensure it is now put to a practical, sustainable and worthwhile use.

"By replacing the existing caravan and outbuilding with a contemporary chalet the character of the setting is much improved."

The application is available to view on the Midlothian Council planning portal.
