'Mid-table at best' - Manchester United fans react to Lopetegui withdrawal from manager race

Manchester United fans are waiting to discover who will be their next permanent manager. MEN Sport understands that Erik ten Hag has been interviewed for the role but no decision has yet been made on whether he will be the next permanent manager with other candidates needing to be interviewed first.

United's shortlist reported includes Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino, but also Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui. These make up the four most realistic choices for the club to move forward with.

Enrique seemed unlikely to be chosen with the World Cup taking place in November and the Spain manager confirmed that he would not be leaving before then in a press conference during the team's international round of fixtures. And now Lopetegui has also seemingly ruled himself out of the race.

Lopetegui's Sevilla side currently sits second in La Liga, but many fans had reservations about the Spanish manager after a disappointing spell with Real Madrid. He was very much the outside option of the four listed above.

When asked about the links and whether he would be staying at his current club Sevilla, he told El Chiringuito: "The [speculation], I can't help it. I am where I want to be. Continue on the Sevilla bench next season? I have no doubt."

With the news that Lopetegui will be remaining in Seville, United fans were quick to react on Twitter, and based on some of their comments they are very happy with the news:

Unless another contender emerges, it seems that United's next manager will be either Ten Hag or Pochettino, with the Dutch manager being heavily preferred. In a survey carried out with the MEN's readers to which around 21,000 people responded, 64.7% of fans wanted Ten Hag.

Hopefully whoever is appointed will be able to get United back on track and build a team that is able to challenge at some point in the future. Who that will be though, we are still yet to see.
