Micro review: 'Romantic Comedy' by Curtis Sittenfeld

Highlights

American writer Curtis Sittenfeld is back with a new novel, this time about contemporary romance, this year. Titled 'Romantic Comedy', the book released in April 2023 and it has topped the bestsellers charts already. It is also picked by Reese Witherspoon for her book club this month.

'Romantic Comedy' follows the story of Sally Milz who works as a scriptwriter for a famous late-night comedy show on TV. While she is successful at work, she channels her inner anger at sexist double-standards of our society through a sketch. The idea being that average men are able to date women who are way out of their league, however the opposite never happens. In her personal life, at 36 and after going through a series of heartbreaks, she has abandoned the thought of love until she meets Noah Brewster, a famous singer and songwriter. While Sally was skeptical about him initially, she grows fond of him and there is an undeniable chemistry between them. But will someone like Noah, who is rich and famous, date someone like her, who is mildly attractive? The idea terrifies Sally to the point where she self-sabotages the possibilities, until they reconnect years later.

The love brewing between Noah and Sally keeps the reader hooked to know what happens next. This is a fun and an entertaining read that readers of romance novel would like to add to their reading list this year.

How critics view the book:

Kirkus Reviews writes, "Romance artfully and entertainingly deconstructed."

Lara Feigel writes for The Guardian, "It’s a moving and compulsive novel".

Scaachi Koul writes for The New York Times, "Curtis Sittenfeld’s latest novel, 'Romantic Comedy', is a love letter to the prototypical rom-com."
