Mick Schumacher tipped to join Red Bull stable and could race with Max Verstappen

Mick Schumacher has been told to join Red Bull's stable and race for AlphaTauri under team boss Franz Tost by a Formula 1 legend.

The German is set to cut ties with Ferrari at the end of the season, having been part of their driver development programme. The surprise revelation was made public earlier this week, casting doubt upon his immediate future in F1.

Schumacher has been driving for Ferrari customer team Haas for the last two seasons, but is not expected to be retained by the Ferrari Driver Academy beyond December. It remains to be seen whether that will affect his chances of an extension with Haas.

The son of the seven-time world champion may have other options, though. One of them could be Alpine, who may lose Oscar Piastri, leaving them needing a new team-mate for Esteban Ocon.

The Frenchman has made it clear he would like that to happen, telling reporters: "What I would like is for Mick to race with me, that is clear because he is my good friend, but that is not going into the bosses' ear. I'll let them decide."

Double world champion Emerson Fittipaldi also wants to see Schumacher continue in F1, and picked out AlphaTauri as a potential destination. Pierre Gasly is contracted for one more year but could move on early, while Yuki Tsunoda's future is uncertain.

"AlphaTauri is a competitive team and they're getting better and better," Fittipaldi told VegasInsider . "I'm trying to compare if Mick goes there and it's hard to compare him to [Gasly and Tsunoda]. I know Gasly is fast but to what level?

"If Mick joins one of the two, it could be a positive surprise there because he's been improving. In the last few grands prix, he's done really well. AlphaTauri is doing well. Franz Tost is a very good guy. He is a former racer. He's developed some amazing drivers. I can see if they pick up Mick because they know he has potential."

If he were to join AlphaTauri, that could see Schumacher made officially part of the Red Bull driver programme. If he could impress with the sister team, his talent and attractiveness to sponsors due to his surname could see him drafted in to race alongside Max Verstappen at some point in the future.
