Mick Schumacher talks about fear after intense Lewis Hamilton battle at Austrian GP

Mick Schumacher feels he will be a better driver for having spent so much time battling for position against Lewis Hamilton at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Their fight for a points position was one of the highlights of Saturday's Sprint. For a while it looked as though Schumacher would keep the seven-time world champion at bay, but eventually Hamilton found a way through to take eighth place.

The German might have thought that was the last he would see of Hamilton for the weekend, but 24 hours later they were once again engaged in a dogfight. The Mercedes man got through, but Schumacher defended admirably once more and was later named driver of the day.

It was also back-to-back points finished for a man who, before the British Grand Prix, had never scored one in F1 before. And it was during that impressive performance at Silverstone that he came up against another champion in the form of Max Verstappen.

Despite not getting better of either of those two F1 heavyweights, Schumacher believes the experience will help him to be fearless when coming up against such opponents going forward. "The main thing that I learned is everybody is human and everybody makes mistakes," he said.

"Everybody is under pressure... sometimes it gets to a point where they do make mistakes. So that's important for me to know that, and not be afraid of fighting anybody out there."

It was another good weekend for Haas, with both drivers scoring points again. The pace they have shown in recent weeks is quite remarkable, considering their tiny budget compared to rivals and the fact they have already stopped development on their 2022 car to focus on next year's effort.

After spending his entire first year in F1 driving an entirely uncompetitive car, Schumacher is pleased to finally be in the fight for points and called it a "refreshing change". He added: "We've shown the potential that the cars have, and also we've shown the potential the drivers have.

"We know what we need for our car to be quick. We had a strong car at the beginning of the year, obviously some people brought updates. We maybe lost our way in terms of set-up a bit, but then it came back to a very good set-up, and other people maybe struggled with their package. So all that completes the result we saw today."
