Mick Schumacher handed F1 lifeline with future on grid in doubt amid Haas uncertainty

Mick Schumacher could be handed a F1 lifeline by Williams with his Haas future uncertain going into the 2023 season.

Schumacher's current deal with Haas expires at the end of the current campaign with Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo emerging as possible contenders to join forces with Kevin Magnussen

Haas have previously admitted Schumacher's future is yet to be decided but Williams have offered the 23-year-old hope that his F1 career could continue next season.

Williams boss Jost Capito told RTL : "Mick deserves to stay in Formula 1. We’ll see if that happens, but he’s definitely an option for us."

"He could really come forward and be a very good driver in Formula 1. He’s now in his second year, if you look at George Russell, he made mistakes as a sophomore at Williams and he still developed.

"The whole market is on the move, something changes every day. We didn’t put any pressure on ourselves. But that doesn’t mean we can’t decide if we wanted to beforehand."

Schumacher has endured a tricky season to date, finishing in the points just twice, and that continued in Singapore as he ended the Grand Prix in 13th.

Capito suggested the lure of having the Schumacher name representing Williams was a 'charming' one but there are other contenders in the frame.

Reserve driver Nyck de Vries appeared the most likely but is now being eyed by AlphaTauri and Capito admits he may look to join another team.

He added: "It’s not just our fault, other teams are also quite interested in Nyck de Vries. You have to see what he decides. We cannot and do not want to decide just yet. If he decides to join another team beforehand, then so be it."
