Mick Schumacher 2023 seat latest as Guenther Steiner is "going through the last details"

Haas are "going through the last details" of deciding who will fill their one open race seat for next season, Guenther Steiner told Mirror Sport.

Mick Schumacher currently races alongside Kevin Magnussen for the team. But while the latter's future is secure for now, his German team-mate's Formula 1 career is far more uncertain with his current contract expiring at the end of the season.

He faces a nervous wait to find out if his first stint in F1 will last for more than two seasons. And Schumacher really has had to be patient, with Haas now the last team on the grid to choose their driver lineup for 2023.

Asked by Mirror Sport about the seat, Steiner joked that he should hurry up and decide so that the speculation can stop. Then he gave his serious answer, and said: "We will get to a decision, hopefully soon. But nothing is decided 100% yet.

"We are just going through the last details of what we have to sort out, and then we will make a decision. It's a job I need to do. When it's done, it's always nice to tick things off the list.

"When you get something done you can then focus on the next thing. This is an important decision for the team, and there is enough to focus on [elsewhere] to get better."

Steiner also opened up on his team's plans for the final three races of the season. They could still climb the table if they can finish the year strongly, but the team boss said he was more concerned about holding on to their current position, with AlphaTauri just one point behind in the constructors' standings.

"At the moment, I think we had better concentrate on defending eighth position, and then attacking seventh," he added. "I'd rather have eighth than take risks to get to seventh – we would need to get lucky. It's all about defence at the moment.

"It has been a year with lots of ups and downs. From where we were last year, where we've got to is very good. What we have to do now is build on what we achieve this year. We have our confidence back – most of it – and we need to build on that, and I think it's achievable. We've shown before that we can do it, and we can do it again."
