A Michigan woman was recently discovered living inside a sign on top of a grocery store, leaving local authorities and residents puzzled by the unusual situation. The 34-year-old woman, who remains unidentified and was reported to be homeless, had been residing within the grocery store sign for a year, equipped with a desk, a coffee maker, a computer, and a printer.
The surprising revelation came to light on April 23 when contractors at the Midland, Michigan store noticed an extension cord running up to the roof, leading them to investigate further. Midland Police Officer Brennon Warren expressed his astonishment at the discovery, stating, 'It's a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign.'
Officer Warren elaborated on the peculiar setup, mentioning the presence of flooring, a mini desk, clothing, a Keurig coffee maker, a printer, and a computer inside the sign. Despite the lack of a visible ladder, the woman had managed to access the 5-foot wide, 8-foot high sign from the store's roof, which featured a door for entry.
Following the encounter, the woman was provided with information about local services and expressed her apologies before departing. Her subsequent whereabouts remain unknown. She disclosed to authorities that she had been living inside the sign for Family Fare grocery market while employed elsewhere.
In response to the incident, Family Fare's parent company, SpartanNash, emphasized the importance of addressing the widespread issue of safe and affordable housing. They commended their employees for handling the situation with compassion and professionalism, highlighting the need for community collaboration in tackling housing challenges nationwide.
