Michigan State vs. Richmond: Will Spartans make easy work of the Spiders?

Can Michigan State make easy work of FCS foe Richmond in a home matchup this weekend? The Spartans Wire staff is here to provide our thoughts on this non-conference matchup.

Michigan State opened the 2023 season with a three-touchdown victory over Central Michigan last week to improve to 1-0 on the year. Richmond wasn’t as lucky, though, starting the 2023 campaign with a disappointing loss against Morgan State last weekend.

Check out our predictions for the Michigan State week two non-conference matchup against Richmond below:

Andrew Brewster

Prediction: MSU 45, Richmond 7

Michigan State started slow against CMU but figured things out along the way. The Spartans showed some big play, and home run ability that was missing last week and I think it will be too much for Richmond, who was expected to be solid as far as FCS teams go but fell on their face in week one.

Cory Linsner

Prediction: MSU 38, Richmond 7

Richmond is coming off of a home loss to Morgan State. This should be a good final tune-up for MSU that shouldn’t have many hiccups. The Spartans need to take care of this one swiftly and handily, or my confidence level for this season will significantly drop.

Robert Bondy

Prediction: MSU 44, Richmond 10

The Spartans got off to a sluggish start in their opener last week and I’m confident that won’t happen again here against the Spiders. Richmond isn’t a pushover program and entered the year ranked amongst FCS foes. But that shouldn’t matter here as Michigan State takes an early lead and never looks back — similar to a few years ago when they faced Youngstown State.
