Michigan State hockey beats Wisconsin, wins Big Ten Championship

For the first time in program history, Michigan State Hockey has won a Big Ten regular season championship. The Big Ten sponsored hockey in 2013-14.

The Spartans knocked off the Wisconsin Badgers, 5-2, in the first game of a weekend series to secure a point advantage that is too big for the Badgers to overcome.

Wisconsin opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the game, bringing the crowd into it. MSU got the ship righted quickly, though, when Artyom Levshunov tied the game just five minutes later.

Jeremy Davidson added another marker with just under two minutes to go in the first and the Spartans led 2-1. Wisconsin got one in the second to send the game to the third tied at 2.

For the Spartans, it was Reed Lebster that got the eventual game winner with 7:10 remaining in the third period.

Davidson and Tiernan Shoudy added empty netters to clinch the 5-2 Big Ten championship win.

The Spartans and Badgers will lock up in another game tomorrow night, before the Big Ten Tournament where the Spartans have earned a first round bye.
