Michigan State basketball overcomes slow start to beat Samford

Michigan State basketball was able to overcome another slow start on Tuesday to beat Samford at home 83 to 75. The Spartans are now 4-1 on the season and undefeated at the Breslin Center after the win.

This is another win for MSU that won’t feel too great, as MSU never fully separated from a scrappy Samford team, but ultimately figured enough out to leave with the victory. I think one of the big takeaways from this one is that Samford might just be an NCAA Tournament caliber team.

For the Spartans, this was another game that featured the two-center lineup with MSU starting the game with Jaxon Kohler and Szymon Zapala on the floor. That combination really struggled and Samford came out of the gates with a big lead, but Michigan State was able to weather that barrage and head into halftime with a 38 to 28 lead thanks to some heroics from Jaden Akins, who scored a career high 25 points.

Samford actually outscored MSU in the second half, but it wasn’t enough, and MSU gets their fourth win of the season.
