Michigan Democrats are gearing up to show their support for Governor Gretchen Whitmer as she prepares to speak at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Whitmer's political group is distributing purple 'I'm with Big Gretch' T-shirts and pink foam models of Michigan with the slogan 'Gretchen Whitmer fights like hell' to delegates in anticipation of her speech.
Detroit rapper Gmac Cash even released a track titled 'Big Gretch' in 2020 to praise the governor's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Known for her signature pink attire and lipstick, Whitmer is scheduled to address the DNC just before Vice President Kamala Harris accepts the party's nomination.
Whitmer previously spoke at the mostly virtual DNC in 2020 and delivered the Democratic response to former President Donald Trump's State of the Union address. She has garnered praise from prominent figures like Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for her leadership in Michigan.
Although Whitmer was considered as a potential running mate for President Joe Biden, she opted to remain as governor until 2026. Despite not joining the ticket with Harris, Whitmer continues to play a key role as a co-chair of Harris' campaign and is committed to helping secure battleground states for the Democratic party.
