Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued an apology following backlash from a social media video she appeared in that was misinterpreted by Catholic bishops in the state. The video, posted on journalist Liz Plank's Instagram page, featured Plank eating a Doritos chip placed in her mouth by Whitmer. The purpose of the video was to promote the bipartisan CHIPS Act, which aimed to boost domestic production of semiconductors in the US.

In the video caption, Plank highlighted the significance of the CHIPS Act for US tech and manufacturing, emphasizing the need to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
