Michigan ahead of Georgia in Phil Steele’s offensive line rankings for 2022

Georgia allowed only 16 sacks in 15 games last season. Its average of 1.07 sacks allowed per game ranked No. 6 in the nation.

Michigan, which played one less game (14) than Georgia thanks to the Bulldogs eliminating the Wolverines in the College Football Playoff semifinal, allowed 14 sacks. That was an average of 1 sack allowed per game, which ranked No. 5 in the nation.

Highly respected college football analyst Phil Steele recently released his 2022 season preview magazine. In it, he ranked the best offensive line units for the upcoming season, where he had Michigan ranked No. 1 and Georgia at No. 2.

Steele’s annual magazine, where he makes predictions for all sorts of scenarios and gives an outlook for every team, is one of the best, most accurate prints in the country every summer.

There’s no doubt that Michigan’s offensive line, which won the Joe Moore Award for the best offensive line in college football, has some serious talent.

But when Georgia and Michigan faced off on New Year’s Eve in Miami, it was the Bulldogs who dominated on both sides of the ball. Georgia recorded four sacks and seven tackles for loss that night.

Michigan had no sacks and only two tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

“Their (Michigan) offensive line, the Joe Moore Award, you know what, somebody that made that decision that’s a lot smarter than me,” Kirby Smart said after Georgia beat Michigan 34-11.

“But we’ve’ got a hell of an offensive line, too, and our guys played with a chip on their shoulder tonight.”
