Michelle Williams' tactics to hide Rockhopper identity after appearing on Masked Singer

Michelle Williams appeared on This Morning on Monday after she was unmasked as Rockhopper on The Masked Singer over the weekend.

Co-hosts Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond asked the Destiny’s Child star about her decision to do the UK’s Masked Singer after appearing in the US version in 2019.

The 42-year-old said: “I just crack up at the show, it’s hilarious! I was like, ‘I would love to do the UK version’ so when asked, of course I said yes.”

She added: “The UK has been extremely wonderful to me and the ladies of Destiny’s Child - and I was like, ‘Anything for me to give back to the UK, I’m there.’”

The Destiny’s Child star said she had made the mistake of trying to sing her best on the US edition of the anonymous singing competition, but decided to make more of an effort to conceal her voice for her turn on the UK version.

She said: “I was concentrating on my vocal performance - ‘Sound good, give them what you’ve got’, but on the UK version, I was like, ‘If you want to stay a little longer, I have to have some tricks up my sleeve.’”

She added: “It’s a family show, people there are enamored with the wardrobe… The people in the wardrobe who head up the costumes, they are brilliant.

“It takes a lot of hard work. Every day, sometimes two or three times a day getting in and out of that costume.”

Michelle added that singing other people’s songs left her “nervous” before a number of the performances, particularly given that some of them were her idols.

She said: “The first song that I did was one of my idols, mentors - not in person, but Whitney Houston. But I did her version of Higher Love and I was definitely nervous, but at that point I was like, ‘Have fun, have fun.’”

On keeping the secret from her family, she said she had to tell a number of lies, including that she was in the UK to promote her new book.

She said: “I was lying. I was having to do the prayer of repentance every time somebody was asking what I was doing!”

There was a double elimination over the weekend, with Aled Jones leaving the programme first when he was unmasked as Traffic Cone earlier in the night, and then later followed by the singer.

Both fans at home and the judges in the studio - Mo Gilligan, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Rita Ora, as well as guest judge Dame Joan Collins - were surprised to see the celebrity behind the elaborate costume.

Other names that thrown into the hat for Rockhopper included Kimberley Wyatt, Alesha Dixon, Nadine Coyle and Nicole Scherzinger with The Greatest Showman star Zendaya also a popular theory.
