Michelle Visage promised the west end a party and she delivered as new musical Scissorhandz: A Musical Reinvented was met with a standing ovation on press night.
The queer reimagining of Tim Burton’s 1990 cult classic Edward Scissorhands originally enjoyed a sold-out run in Los Angeles to rave reviews.
It is currently playing at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant until March 29 having originally premiered in Los Angeles.
The purple carpet was rolled out on Thursday for the press night and while fiercely “proud” of the production, producer Visage opted to keep her attendance low-key and the attention firmly on the stage.
There were no speeches from her, though the self-confessed Madonna mega fan could be heard enthusiastically singing along to one of the Queen of Pop’s tracks ahead of the show’s curtain going up.
The audience were captivated for the entirety of the one hour and thirty minute runtime, which is just as well as there was no interval.
Featuring hit after hit from the likes of Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Alanis Morissette, the juke box musical has something for everyone and is a celebration of powerhouse vocals and being unashamaedly different. The show is also wildly hilarious.
Speaking to The Standard, Ru Paul’s Drag Race judge Visage, 56, enthused: “Scissorhands is just a joy and I think everyone’s going to love it. It is camp, it is fun [and] it is appropriate for all ages.”
She serves as co-producer alongside another high-profile name - Former *NSYNC band member Lass Bass.
Describing the Bye, Bye, Bye hit-maker as a “dear friend”, we’re both thrilled, excited and we believe in it, the New Jeresey native - who hosts a weekly show on BBC Radio 2 every Friday - added: “We’re both thrilled, excited and we believe in it.
“Everybody loved it in Los Angeles and I know the London theatregoer and I think they’re really, really going to love it.”
