Former first lady Michelle Obama did not attend the state funeral Thursday for former President Jimmy Carter. All living former presidents and their spouses were present at the funeral, except for Michelle Obama. Barack Obama, along with other former presidents, sat in the front pews of Washington National Cathedral behind President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and their spouses.
Michelle Obama's office confirmed her absence from the funeral but did not provide details on her whereabouts or reasons for not attending. A spokesperson stated that Michelle Obama sent her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family and all who admired the former President.
CNN reported that Michelle Obama had a scheduling conflict and remained in Hawaii, where she was on an extended vacation.
State funerals for former presidents are significant events that bring together prominent leaders from past and present, along with dignitaries from various branches of the U.S. government and representatives of foreign leaders.
During the funeral, interactions between political figures were observed, with Barack Obama appearing cordial towards his successor, Donald Trump. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also exchanged pleasantries with Trump. Trump was seen shaking hands with his former vice president, Mike Pence, despite recent political disagreements.
The dignitaries are expected to convene again in Washington on Jan. 20 for the presidential inauguration. Michelle Obama's spokesperson did not confirm whether she would attend the inauguration.
