AN 18th-century Scottish restaurant, famed for having a Michelin star, has been put on sale.
The Peat Inn, situated in the Fife hamlet of the same name, has been providing hospitality in the area for more than 250 years, agents Christie and Co said.
Last month, the inn was named on the list of 13 Scottish restaurants to have a Michelin star for 2025, having first won one in 2010. The prestigious guide says that the whitewashed inn serves up top local produce “put to great use in vibrant, flavoursome dishes”.
The current owners, Geoffrey and Katherine Smeddle, have run the restaurant and rooms since 2006.
Christie and Co said their “business is well-established and has a reputation for being one of Scotland’s most cherished destination restaurants”.

“The Peat Inn is one of the most established and celebrated venues in Scotland and can continue to be so in new hands.
“It has been a ‘go to’ restaurant for many from the area and internationally, be it for celebrations or business, and a buyer may well be a previous customer who will now be able to have the prestige of owning this iconic venue.”
The asking price for the restaurant has not been made publicly available, but will be shared by the agent with interested parties.
The Christie and Co listing states: “The Peat Inn is thought to have been built in the mid-1700s. Gradually, the surrounding village grew up around the inn, taking its name from the inn itself, creating the unusual address: The Peat Inn, Peat Inn.
“The original building has served down the centuries as a coaching inn, a hotel, a pub and a restaurant. Through these changing incarnations, The Peat Inn has an uninterrupted history of offering hospitality for around 250 years.”
The inn is around six miles from St Andrews and seven miles from Cupar. Its restaurant has space for around 50 covers, and it has eight “beautifully appointed suites” for accommodation rental.
