Each year, the Michelin Guide hands out its famous stars to restaurants around the world. Awarded in ones, twos and threes, they’re the best-known indicators of quality in the culinary sphere; the more stars, the better the food (and, more often than not, the higher the accompanying price tag).
But that’s not the only way Michelin gives praise for a decent plate of grub. Its Bib Gourmand award focuses more on value for money — or, in the Guide’s own words, a restaurant that “will leave you with a sense of satisfaction, at having eaten so well at such a reasonable price”.
Much like the stars, the exact criteria for Bib Gourmand-worthy restaurants are shrouded in secrecy, although Michelin has admitted it follows “no set formula for a Bib restaurant”. Even so, you can be pretty much assured of a quality meal at any of the chosen restaurants, making it a handy compass for hungry diners.
In 2022, five new London restaurants have been added to London’s Bib Gourmand selection, from a Tuscan trattoria in Clerkenwell to a Middle Eastern marvel in Soho. It brings the overall number of inclusions to 35. Happy eating.
