Michael Weatherly Makes Surprise Cameo In NCIS Season 21

NCIS Season 21

New set images have been released offering fans a closer look at Michael Weatherly's return as Tony DiNozzo in NCIS season 21, episode 2. Weatherly makes a surprise cameo almost a decade after leaving the show, returning just in time to participate in sending off Ducky, the team's beloved medical examiner-turned-historian.

The cameo occurs in the final moments of episode 2, titled 'The Stories We Leave Behind,' as Palmer prepares to deliver Ducky's eulogy. The official NCISVerse Instagram account shared new images of Weatherly's cameo, showcasing behind-the-scenes moments of him goofing around with cast members and entering the autopsy room to see Palmer.

Weatherly's character, Tony DiNozzo, left NCIS in season 13 to take care of his secret daughter with Cote de Pablo's Ziva David. While there were discussions about featuring more returning characters for Ducky's send-off, the writers decided on just one cameo by Weatherly.

Although Mark Harmon's absence as Gibbs in the episode may have been disappointing for some fans, Brian Dietzen, who co-wrote the episode, explained that DiNozzo's return was primarily to support Palmer in his time of loss.

DiNozzo's presence brings a touch of humor to the episode, with his antics providing some light-hearted moments amidst the somber occasion. Weatherly's return is currently planned as a one-off, but the actor has expressed interest in revisiting his role in the future if needed by the show's creators.

NCIS season 21 airs new episodes every Monday on CBS, focusing on the dynamics of a team working together in high-stress situations. The show follows Special Agent Alden Parker and his team as they investigate crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties, showcasing a mix of drama, humor, and suspense.
