Malky Mackay has turned the tide at Ross County – and how he isn't in the running for Hibs' vacant job has stunned Michael Stewart.
The Hibees finished what has been a calamitous Scottish Premiership term in style and eighth with a 4-0 victory over playoff-bound St Johnstone.
It's been a campaign of chopping and changing with Jack Ross sacked as boss in December, one week prior to a League Cup Final, having guided them to third last year.
Shaun Maloney was brought in to pick up the reins but he was dismissed after four months with bottom six football beckoning.
Mackay meanwhile transformed County’s fortunes, turning them into a top six club that narrowly missed out on Europe.
Record Sport revealed on Saturday that former Sunderland boss Lee Johnson has agreed terms to take charge but ex-Malmo manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is still in the running.
Michael Appelton and Roy Keane have also been linked, like Mackay was last month. But why he still isn't being spoken about has baffled former Hearts midfielder Stewart.
He explained: "You can never guarantee an appointment is going to be success. But the names being banded out don't fill me with confidence that Hibs are looking in the right area.
"Malky Mackay has drifted away and not being spoken about, which just flabbergasts me. He is the standout appointment and contender in the Scottish game.
"He's shown what he can do with limited resources. I'm surprised he's not in the running.
"We are talking about guys who kicked about the English Football League, without really doing anything that stands out and suggests they will be a good appointment."
But the problems don't just stop with the manager. Hibs' board have fired Jack Ross and Maloney this season, and BBC pundit Stewart questions if executive chairman Ron Gordon knows what he is doing.
He added on Sportsound: "The names mentioned, they might come in and be alright. But Hibs as a club, I felt two years ago they had a sense of clarity in what they were trying to do.
"There was an identity. Now, I am not sure. If you're an outsider, you can't see a clear strategy in what they are trying to do.
"A lot of this has been on their shoulders. For me, since they got rid in Jack Ross, that decisions has highlighted their incompetence. I'm not sure they are going to be capable of rectifying that."
