Michael Stewart accuses Hearts board of 'bottling' it as he reignites war of words over Robbie Neilson sacking

There were fiery exchanges last week and the same has kicked off again as Hearts' situation was debated with Michael Stewart.

The former midfielder has been clear in his stance that sacking Robbie Neilson was the wrong decision by the Tynecastle hierarchy, who watched interim manager Steven Naismith's first game in charge end in a 1-0 derby loss to Hibs. It leaves them five points off Aberdeen in third and needing to buck a trend of six successive Premiership losses to rekindle hopes of European group stage football again.

Last week on Sportsound, Stewart, Tom English and host Kenny Macintyre were embroiled in an on-air row over the former Jambos' criticism of Craig Levein in comparison to Neilson. And with Naismith's caretaker tenure off to the worst start, sparks have flared again on the current situation in Gorgie as the pundits went back and forth.

Michael Stewart: "This is such a ludicrous world we live in. Tom was saying earlier it's a mortal blow to Steven Naismith in terms of him becoming Hearts manager. So we are judging Steven Naismith on one game now? It's mental.

Tom English: "It's different now though, Michael. You talk about Robbie and correctly talk about a group of Hearts fans who have never forgave him for the defeat in the cup all those years ago against Hibs.

Stewart: "I have never said this.

English: "You said it on the radio about three hours ago.

Stewart: "No I didn't.

English: "You said there was a group of Hearts fans who always had it in for him.

Stewart: "I did, I never mentioned anything about a game.

English: "Ok, so tell me why they had it in for him then?

Stewart: "I don't know. So you agree with me that there's always been a section of the fans who have had it in for him?

English: "There's never been any doubt about that.

Stewart: "So why were you jumping down my throat earlier this afternoon?

English: "About what?

Stewart: "I'm sorry Tom, am I living in a parallel universe here, Kenny asked me about what Robbie Nelson would be thinking this afternoon. I was then talking about what Robbie Neilson would be thinking and how I thought it was a ludicrous decision and how I thought there was a section of the Hearts support who never liked him. You jumped down my throat."

The debate raged on for several more minutes before Stewart had one final say on what he thought of the Hearts board: "We are judging the decision made by the board and they have to make sensible decisions. For me, they have bottled it, in particular, the ones who are pressurised from the fans."
