Michael Sheen has been declared an “incredible person” after helping to clear £1m worth of debt for neighbours in his local community of Port Talbot in new documentary Secret Million Pound Giveaway.
The programme, which aired on Channel 4 on Monday night, saw the Good Omens actor, 56, use £100,000 of his own money to buy credit from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and wipe off debt to the value of £1m, to help over 900 people in south Wales where he grew up.
Sheen - who has previously described himself a not-for-profit actor, meaning he puts a lot of his earnings into charity and community projects - said he wanted to make this documentary to shine a light on social injustice, financial strife and the way that big banks and credit finance companies profit from the most vulnerable.
The Sandman star went on to explain that he wanted a "fair" credit system and was hoping that by raising awareness, he could help drive change.
Due to data protection reasons he will never know the identities of the people he has helped, but said that he wasn't bothered as it was "about making a difference and a point".
Viewers were absolutely blown away and rushed to social media platform X to heap praise on Sheen for his noble actions.
“I’ve got a new hero - Michael Sheen is something else!” wrote one person.
"If there were more people like Michael Sheen, the world'd be a better place” agreed another.
“That there are humans on this earth like Michael Sheen gives me hope in a world full of greed obsessed, self serving people,” remarked a third, adding: “Making me quote emotional watching this. Imagine what the world’s richest men could accomplish #michaelsheengiveaway @michaelsheen God bless you x”.
With a fourth concluding: “@michaelsheen , you are an incredible human . I really hope you get the answers you want from the banks - and we're all behind you in your endeavours. Absolute gentleman! Keep fighting the good fight #michaelsheen @Channel4
