Michael Schumacher's son Mick in serious Formula One crash and taken from track in ambulance

Mick Schumacher has been taken by ambulance off the race track in Saudi Arabia after a serious crash this evening.

The son of legend Michael Schumacher was involved in the huge smash in qualifying in Formula One's second race of the season.

Racing chiefs red flagged the session as the Haas driver was attended to by doctors.

Haas F1 team tweeted in the last few minutes: "We’ve heard that Mick is conscious, out of the car and currently on his way to the medical centre."

The team's principal said there were "no injuries" and the driver is recovering.

Romain Grosjean, who famously survived a crash when his car burst into flames, also tweeted: "Let's hope for some reassuring news from @SchumacherMick ASAP."

The qualifying event has been suspended as the track is cleared and the driver is brought for treatment.

In the competitive action itself, Lewis Hamilton suffered a shock qualifying elimination and will start 16th in the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

It was a disastrous session for Hamilton who could only achieve a lap time good enough for 16th place, which saw the seven-time world champion eliminated in Q1. His teammate George Russell, however, set a lap time that was good enough for fourth on the grid during that same session..
