Michael Schumacher's legendary title-winning Ferrari sold for record price at auction

Michael Schumacher's legendary Ferrari, that he drove to the 2003 world championship, has been sold for a record price at auction in Geneva.

The F1 car in question - named F2003 GA Chassis 229 - was driven nine times by Schumacher on the way to securing his sixth world championship. It was tipped to fetch around £8million at auction in Geneva on Wednesday but it has smashed the modern record, going for a hefty £11.6million (13m Swiss francs).

The previous record was also held by a Ferrari driven by Schumacher, although that sold for considerably less at £6.6m in New York in 2017.

Sotherby auctioneers said: "It is one of the most significant F1 cars of all time. This remarkable car has achieved a world record price for modern-era F1."

Schumacher's sixth world title in 2003 saw him break the previous record of five, set by Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1950s. The Argentine's 1954 Mercedes boasts the all-time record sale though, fetching £25.5m in 2013.

The legendary German would go on to win the title the following year and retired with six world crowns, a tally that has since been matched by Lewis Hamilton.

The new owner of the car cannot take it home though, and must request to use it on track days as part of a Ferrari client programme. It can be delivered to any circuits across Europe and the US, and comes with analysis tools and coaching from ex-drivers.

Schumacher has not been seen in public since suffering serious head injuries in a skiing accident in 2013. His family have kept details of his condition private.

Schumacher's son Mick is currently competing in F1 with Haas, although his future remains unclear beyond the end of this season.
