Michael Schumacher's family is reportedly set to create a new 'winter home' for the stricken Formula 1 star to rest in as he continues his recovery from his horror skiing accident.
Since that 2013 crash, the German has been cared for by his wife and close family at their home near Lake Geneva. Updates have been few and far between, with details of his condition only shared with trusted close friends such as former FIA chief Jean Todt.
The most recent public update revealed that Schumacher is able to watch his son Mick race in Formula 1. And he may be able to do so from a new location soon, according to reports.
German magazine Bunte claims the family has bought a plot in Majorca for £2.35m. The 54,215 square-metre piece of land is near to a villa they already own on the Spanish island, which they bought for £27m in 2018 from Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez.
"There are dilapidated buildings that can be demolished," said the report, adding: "The agent praised the property as 'an absolute rarity in the region of south-west Mallorca' due to its close proximity to the sea."
The previous owners of the site, which contains hundreds of planted almond trees, were reportedly wanting £3m for the property. After buying it, the Schumachers plan to develop it to recreate the horse ranches they already own in Switzerland and the United States.
Last week, the seven-time world champion was awarded the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia – the highest honour the region can bestow. His wife Corinna accepted the award on his behalf and burst into tears as she and daughter Gina-Maria were given a standing ovation by all in attendance.
F1 racer Mick was due to be present at the ceremony, but was forced to skip it through illness. Todt was also there to support the family, and later Tweeted: "An emotional Ceremony in Cologne to honour Michael Schumacher's outstanding career and charitable streak with Corinna, Gina, Mick Schumacher and Henrik Wust. I met Michael 30 years ago, with Ferrari, living his passion and bringing joy to millions of us!"
He later added when speaking to Bild: "No-one planned it to be so emotional that tears were shed by Corinna, but sometimes it's good to not always control yourself."
