Michael Penix Jr. Had an Emotional Walk Off the Field After Final College Football Game

Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies fell short in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday night, losing to the Michigan Wolverines, 34–13.

The loss marks the end of Penix’s illustrious college football career, as this season was the quarterback’s last year of NCAA eligibility and he’s expected to declare for the NFL.

Before heading into the Huskies’ locker room after the final whistle, Penix could be seen slowly walking off the field in what was an emotional end to his college career.

Cameras followed the Washington quarterback as he limped toward the tunnel while clutching at his midsection, appearing banged up after the battle against Michigan.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Penix reflected on his career, saying he was “blessed” to have met coach Kalen DeBoer and taking accountability for the Huskies’ struggles on offense.

“I’ve been through a lot. I’ve had ups and downs. But I’m super blessed to meet Coach DeBoer at Indiana, to lead me here, to play for the biggest game in college football,” said Penix.

“Obviously, we didn’t come out how we wanted to. But I know each and every player on this team gave it their all, but it wasn’t enough today. For me, I’m going to take accountability for the offensive side of the ball.”

Penix completed 27-of-51 pass attempts for 255 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions during Monday night’s loss.

In 2023, Penix threw 36 touchdowns to 11 interceptions, and racked up almost 4,900 passing yards. The 23-year-old ended his six-year collegiate career with a tremendous season that saw him named a Heisman finalist.
