Michael Owen predicts Arsenal vs Wolves result in key match in top four race

Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers face off for the second time in a month, and Mikel Arteta's side know three points at the Emirates Stadium could be huge in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.

Pundit Michael Owen has given his thoughts on the game, which he acknowledges is a massive one for both teams, especially after European rivals Tottenham Hotspur lost more ground by losing at Burnley in midweek.

The last meeting between Arsenal and Wolves was a tight one, with centre-back Gabriel putting the Gunners in front and Mikel Arteta's side holding out for three points despite finishing the game with 10 men.

Victory for either side would help them close the gap on fourth-place Manchester United, who have a winnable game of their own over the weekend, but Owen isn't anticipating a goal-filled game.

"It wasn’t emphatic, but Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Brentford was a vital one," Owen told BetVictor.

"Arsenal’s games are rarely high-scoring but they could do with more attacking threat. I do see a lot of improvement in this side at the back though, they’ve got a good platform there."

Arteta's men are the lowest scorers in the top six, but only four teams in the entire Premier League - including seventh-placed Wolves - have conceded fewer than the London side.

Three points for Bruno Lage's men would take them above Arsenal, and Owen noted "this is a massive game for them".

"Wolves’ top-four hopes probably rest on getting at least something from this game," the 42-year-old said.

"They can’t afford to lose here and drop further away from Arsenal. Daniel Podence really impressed against Leicester, and he was a threat all day.

"Both sides will be desperate to not lose this game. I don’t think we will see a lot of goals at the Emirates, I actually think we’ll see a goalless draw!"

“[The players] know what every game means for us," Arteta said in his press conference ahead of the game.

"We know how close it will be right until the end, we’ve seen a lot of different results that you don’t really expect.

“We play at home and the importance of getting the points when we play at home is going to be crucial to get to the destination.”

Wolves boss Lage also recognised the significance of the game, telling the media “We need to go with the same ambition, personality to play our game against a strong team.

"They are doing a good season, the last games they were playing well and scoring goals, so we need to understand that also," the Portuguese said.

"We know we have two games [in four days] but every time we talk one game at a time. For now, it’s Arsenal, we played against them two weeks ago, it’s an important game for us, but also Arsenal, maybe the pressure is on Arsenal’s side, not us."
