Michael Owen points out flaw in plan to stop pitch invasions

Michael Owen has spotted a flaw in a proposed plan to stop pitch invasions at Premier League football matches.

He appeared on Monday's instalment of Good Morning Britain to discuss the issue after players have been targeted by fans as the season drew to a close this week. On Sunday, Liverpool legend and Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard said one of his players was “attacked” following their final league match.

Reserve goalkeeper and former Everton player Robin Olsen was seen holding his head before making his way down the tunnel. Gerrard said: "He said: "Our goalkeeper was attacked. We're going to see how he is now, but I think you should ask Pep [Guardiola] and Manchester City those questions.""

GMB host Susanna Reid suggested clubs should be punished if their supporters invade pitches. She said fans wouldn't dare enter the pitch if they feared their side could be docked points.

Former Reds star Michael Owen said: "It's the ultimate... taking points off. But you open a can of worms. If I'm a Manchester United fan and Manchester City are playing, I'll buy a ticket for Manchester City and I'd go on the pitch."

Richard Madeley interjected with: "A lot of people would have to do that". Michael replied: "Points, it's not necessarily the players' fault, it's not necessarily the clubs' fault. I think people just have to act like normal, decent citizens."

Susanna said: "But that's the point, they're not acting like normal, decent citizens".
