Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has explained why an early claim made about Darwin Nunez looks “laughable”.
The Reds frontman was signed in the summer from Benfica in a deal that could reach up to £85.5million including add-ons. Should that happen, Nunez would become Liverpool ’s club-record signing, surpassing the fee paid to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
Nunez has had an inconsistent start to his time on Merseyside, with three goals to his name so far. His latest strike came against Arsenal in the 3-2 Premier League defeat at the weekend.

Before the season started, Nunez was being compared to Erling Haaland, who had signed for Manchester City. The Norwegian has enjoyed a much better start to life in England, scoring 20 goals in just 13 appearances.
Owen has assessed Nunez’s time at Liverpool so far, and explained why he can’t see too much wrong with the start to life at Anfield.
“I think he’s a stop-start start, he got a red card early in his career and you want to make a big impression with your new team,” Owen told BT Sport.
“Lets bear in mind, at the start of the season we were saying two big signings one at Man City, one at Liverpool, who’s going to score the most goals?
“At the moment it looks laughable because one is firing and one is finding his feet in the Premier League.
“A lot of people are writing him off or saying ‘ooh, I’m not sure about Liverpool’s new signing’. I don’t think he’s done anything wrong for Liverpool so far, he scored against Arsenal, he played fine against Rangers - a lot of chances.
“We talk about time, Firmino’s had plenty, cool in front of goal. He scored against Arsenal, we know all about him, just a touch of class.”
