Michael Owen believes Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez could be 'the same' as former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba after proving critics wrong during his first season in the Premier League.
Drogba was laughed at by rival fans when arriving from Marseille at Stamford Bridge back in 2004 and quickly became one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen.
Former Liverpool striker Owen was in awe of Nunez after his display during the Reds' 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Sunday evening.
PLAYER RATINGS: Mohamed Salah and two others superb in win over Tottenham
VERDICT: Jurgen Klopp will have loved what Tottenham fans did moments before Liverpool win confirmed
Nunez didn't find the back of the net in London, but he was a handful for the Spurs defence and provided the assist for the first of Mohamed Salah 's two goals as the two forge a formidable partnership up front.
Owen told Matchday Live : "I remember when Didier Drogba came into this league and everybody laughed at him. His touch was awful for the first year, he made a lot of mistakes, he looked quite raw himself and then he developed into an absolute monster of a centre-forward. I think this lad could be the same.”
The Ballon d'Or winner touched on the rawness of Nunez's game, but also highlighted how the Uruguayan 'takes your breath away'.
"I think the people who are a little bit negative are going to have egg on their face in a couple of years,” added Owen. “This lad, okay he’s raw in one or two areas but he does things that take your breath away.”
