Michael Owen and the Celtic Park element that left him 'absolutely frightened' during rare visit

Michael Owen has revealed that playing for Real Madrid in El Clásico doesn't compare to the atmosphere he experienced at Celtic Park.

Ange Postecoglou's men are back on the big stage tonight as they host Los Blancos under the lights in their Champions League opener. It is the tie the supporters and players have dreamed of landing for years as the reigning European champions come to town.

Players past and present are not shy when it comes to heaping praise on the electric atmosphere produced on European nights in Glasgow's east end and former Liverpool, Real and England striker Owen is no different. He described his two experiences as 'absolutely frightening' and says to this day it is still the No1 stadium experience he has had in his career.

Speaking as a pundit on BT Sport in the build-up to the big game, he said: "It's a long time since I've been here. I played here twice early in my career.

"I always remember the atmosphere. I've played in a few big games. El Clásico for Real Madrid is one of the loudest, unbelievable atmospheres but I've never heard anything like this stadium.

"You'll Never Walk Alone got played before the game then the flow through the game was absolutely frightening. I maintain to this day, the best atmosphere I've ever played in."
