Chelsea's lack of clinical finishing cost them once again as they crashed out of the Champions League. Real Madrid progressed into the semi-finals after securing a 4-0 aggregate win thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio in the first-leg, followed by two goals from Rodrygo at Stamford Bridge in the return leg.
N'Golo Kante, Marc Cucurella and Conor Gallagher all had glorious opportunities to level the score in the tie, but wasted chances cost the Blues as Madrid put the tie to bed in the second half. Chelsea will now look to finish the season strong in the Premier League with seven games left to play - despite European football qualification looking highly unlikely.
Frank Lampard has not yet managed to win a game since returning to the Blues as caretaker manager until the end of the 2022/23 campaign. The need for a clinical striker at Chelsea is clear, but the issue was not addressed despite Todd Boehly spending over £600million on new signings in the last two transfer windows.

Speaking to BT Sport after Chelsea were dumped out of the Champions League, Ferdinand outlined the issues facing the Blues and admitted another big summer transfer window awaits them ahead of next season. The former Manchester United defender said: "They [Chelsea] don’t score enough goals, that’s obvious.
"That team that started the game had 17 goals between them for the season - Benzema outscored that completely on his own, so that tells you where they’re at. Today in the first half they created chances, they had arguably the best chances in the first half, but they just didn’t have anyone to put the ball in the net and that’s been an issue.
"Recruitment in the summer is going to be massive for this football club - as much as they want to get players, to get people out. They’ve got to get players out to make sure there’s room to bring players in.
Owen agreed with Ferdinand's assessment of the main problem facing Chelsea at present but believes there were positives from the performance against Madrid at Stamford Bridge. The former Liverpool striker said: "Overall I didn’t think Chelsea were bad at all tonight and I think Frank Lampard can take positives.
"But again, going back to what we said at the start of the show, they spent all that money and don’t get any strikers in, look toothless, goalscoring is a problem. But, it’s not just the centre forwards, throughout the team they don’t really score enough goals amongst themselves."
