Gonzaga, D.C. 77, No. 4 Homewood-Flossmoor 47: This one was close for a half and then it wasn’t. Gonazaga did the same thing to St. Ignatius last season. Bryce Heard scored nine. Gianni Cobb and Jayden Tyler each added eight points.
Sidwell Friends, D.C. 56, No. 7 Curie 54: The Condors fell short against the Quakers, who are ranked No. 6 in the country by MaxPreps. Will Gonzalez, a transfer from Riverside-Brookfield, led the way with 11 points and Michael Oliver Jr. scored 10.
Pace, Ga. 63, Hyde Park 35: The Georgia powerhouse dominated Hyde Park. Jurrell Baldwin led the Thunderbirds with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
Riverside-Brookfield 50, No. 17 St. Ignatius 49: This one was close the whole way and the Bulldogs pulled it out at the end thanks to a huge block by Stefan Cicic (10 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks). Steven Brown and Austin Mehki also scored 10. Phoenix Gill led St. Ignatius with 22 points and
No. 24 Warren 77, No. 14 Bolingbrook 64: Promising freshmen typically provide moments. Brief flashes of brilliance in the game, enough to tantalize fans about what the next four years could bring. Warren’s Jaxson Davis and Bolingbrook’s Davion Thompson are unique. Both young players are already far more advanced. Saturday at the Chicago Elite Classic the two freshmen completely lived up to the initial barrage of hype that surrounded them the first few weeks of the season. Read all about it.
Lindblom 72, No. 29 Joliet West 66: Swoop, swoop. The Eagles outscored Joliet West 22-13 in the fourth quarter to get the comeback win. JeShawn Stevenson Jr. led Lindblom (2-1) with 26 points and 11 rebounds and Quentin McCoy added 23 points and eight rebounds. Aamir Shannon had the first eye-opening moment of the day. The Joliet West soph threw down an impressive dunk as the Tigers lead 44-33 at halftime. Senior Justus McNair led Joliet West (5-2) with 24 points, eight rebounds and six assist. Drew King added nine points, 15 rebounds and four blocks.
St. Louis Cardinal Ritter 65, No. 6 Young 63: The Dolphins have so many talented young players and so few experienced veteran scorers. It’s going to be fascinating to watch how the team comes together this season. We saw an early struggle and then some very promising signs on Saturday. Young trailed by 26 but fought all the way back and had a very long shot for the win at the end. Damajay Richardson scored 15 points. Antonio Munoz contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
Young had a heave at the end to try and win but it didn’t fall.
