A man critically injured in a one-punch attack on the Gold Coast has died in hospital.

Police said Michael Hayes, 39, was punched outside Destino Wine and Cocktail Bar at Hope Island on Saturday night by a man wearing a dark tracksuit.

He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital and placed on life support.

Family and friends have posted condolence messages to social media after his death this morning.

Police said Mr Hayes left the bar between 9pm and 9:30pm to talk to a unidentified man, who allegedly punched him on the side of the head.

The precinct was full of diners visiting the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

Police have called for any interstate visitors in the area at the time to come forward.

Anyone with relevant dash cam footage or CCTV has been asked to come forward as well.

The man is described as Caucasian with short dark hair and aged between 20 and 30.
