Michael Edwards 'rejects' shock 'approach' from Premier League club ahead of Liverpool exit

Michael Edwards has reportedly turned down an approach from Chelsea to become the club's new sporting director.

Edwards is departing Anfield this summer after over a decade at the club and is credited with being a key figure in the Reds’ successful recruitment in recent years. He became sporting director in 2016 and during his time in the role Liverpool signed a number of key players, including goalkeeper Alisson, defender Virgil van Dijk and forward Mohamed Salah.

He is being replaced at Anfield by Julian Ward, previously assistant sporting director. Ward has already shown his acumen by adding Darwin Nunez and Calvin Ramsay this summer, along with the previously agreed signing of Fabio Carvalho.

Chelsea are under new ownership after being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital following the end of Roman Abramovich’s tenure. Re-structuring behind the scenes has already taken place at Stamford Bridge with long serving chairman Bruce Buck departing along with influential director Marina Granovskaia, who was widely hailed for her work in the transfer market. Boehly himself has been appointed as chairman and is also acting as interim sporting director.

But according to a report from CaughtOffside, Boehly recently approached Edwards to become Chelsea's new sporting director but the offer was rejected by the Liverpool transfer chief.
