Charges have been upgraded to murder for a man allegedly involved in a fatal crash in Adelaide's south last year.

Michael Charles Henley, 23, was allegedly driving a Ford sedan that crashed into a Toyota Hilux on Flaxmill Road at Morphett Vale on July 20, 2021.

A 20-year-old man from Sellicks Beach, who was a passenger in the Toyota, died at the scene, while the driver, a 22-year-old from Morphett Vale, was injured.

Police have previously said in a statement that the Ford failed to stop at the scene and was later found burnt out in a gully off the Southern Expressway at Reynella.

Mr Henley turned himself into police a few days after the crash and was charged with manslaughter, causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a crash and failure to comply with the Emergency Management Act.

He has now been charged with murder, endangering life and leaving an accident scene after causing death.

Mr Henley's passenger, 20-year-old Joshua Shawn Rossborough, has been charged with impeding the investigation.

Manslaughter charges against Mr Rossborough have been dropped.

The matter will return to court in April.
