Michael Carrick laughed off the question when asked who he wanted to win in the Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle.
Erik ten Hag has the opportunity to end United's worst trophy drought for over 40 years in just his first season in charge of the club later this month, when the Reds take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on February 26.
Carrick, who is now managing Middlesbrough, was born in Wallsend, Newcastle and he grew up supporting the North East club, but he spent the bulk of his career at Old Trafford and his allegiances have been questioned ahead of the final.

After the final was made official, Carrick was asked who he would support at his Middlesbrough press conference and he delivered a light-hearted, perhaps diplomatic response with a smile etched across his face.
“I’m not involved in that one! I’ve got enough going on here to worry about never mind what’s going on elsewhere," Carrick said.
"Listen, I live in Manchester and I played football there for so long. It’s been a big part of my life and still is. First and foremost, it’s great to see both clubs in the final and I’m delighted for both teams in different ways.
"Whoever wins, I can’t really win. We’ll see what happens and I hope it’s a good game.”
United last played Newcastle in a major final in 1999, beating the North East club 2-0 in the FA Cup at Wembley.
