Michael Buble 'close to tears' backstage before Newcastle arena show

Michael Buble looked like he was close to tears before going on stage in Newcastle on Tuesday night, hinting that the reason was the fact he was watching heart wrenching movie The Notebook in his dressing room.

The Canadian singer treated Geordie fans to a double header of shows at the Utilita Arena, after huge demand for tickets to see him make his return to the North East, following a raucous outdoor gig in Chester-le-Street last summer.

As well as a packed repertoire of perfectly executed covers and entertaining originals, on opening night, Michael got the audience swiftly on side by explaining how he'd been out around town on Bank Holiday Sunday and been somewhat taken aback by an encounter with some drunken revellers, exclaiming: "This was at 2pm! It was the most amazing thing I've experienced in any city I've ever been to!"

Michael was in fine form once again for round two on Tuesday, although he did tell the audience he thought the mood seemed a bit 'tentative' when he arrived on stage. After the audience got warmed up, he then briefly paused the show to jump down into the crowd to treat a super fan in the front row to a hug and a selfie.

But, while all smiles during the show, Michael looked a lot mote downbeat on a video he posted to his TikTok and Instagram, not long before making his entrance.

He cautioned the video: "Me everytime I watch The Notebook," with crying eye emojis to emphasise his sentiments, before adding: "Noah and Allie are actually based on a real couple?" and asking fans to tell him their favourite 'cry movies.'

One of his millions of followers replied: "Read the book, and you will know what cry is for real. Bought it when it was first released. Read it on the plane back to Barcelona from Boston. GoodLord I was a mess on that plane," with another telling him: "The notebook is 100% the saddest movie. Followed by Steel Magnolias."
