Michael Beale believes Steven Davis could be a future Rangers manager.
The veteran Northern Ireland midfielder has been ruled out for the season due to injury in a bitter blow to both the player and the Light Blues management. He is out of contract in the summer but his club boss believes he has at least 18 months left at the top level with the Ibrox side in a playing capacity.
Rangers gaffer Beale has revealed a plan is in place for the 37-year-old moving forward with the midfielder one that the management team always want 'in and around the club' both as a player and if he decides to go down the coaching/management route after he decides to hang up his boots. The Ibrox gaffer said: “It’s a huge blow, but we needed to wait until the swelling went down, do a scan and let Steven process the results of that.
“As a club, we have a plan for Steven anyway. Moving forward, he’s someone we always want in and around the club, both as a player and to help him in his second career if he chooses to go that route.
“Only Steven will make the decision on his future. Knowing him, I think he’d be keen to play on. Having seen him in the games since I returned, he has at least 18 months left at this level, certainly now with five subs.
“Could there be a coaching role for him here? Yeah, but I’m sure Northern Ireland have got their eye on him too. It’d be nice to have a future Rangers manager on the staff one day.
“Over the last couple of years the club has seen a lot of staff leaving with managers, but I always think it’s nice to have a manager in waiting.
“Whether he’s the next manager or just on the road to being it, it would be ideal succession planning for the club.
“The most important person is Steven, so until we talk we’ll just support him through the operation and see where it takes us.”
